Leaf Stains on Brick Pavers

Brick pavers add timeless beauty and functionality to outdoor spaces, but they can be susceptible to unsightly leaf stains, especially during fall or after heavy rains.  These stains, caused by tannins in the leaves, can seep into the porous surface of the pavers, leaving behind dark or discolored spots.

What Causes Leaf Stains on Brick Pavers?

When leaves fall onto brick pavers and sit for extended periods, they begin to decompose and release tannins, a natural chemical found in many plants.  These tannins can penetrate the surface of porous materials like brick, and natural stone, causing dark brown or even black stains.

Common causes of leaf stains include:

Wet weather or irrigation, accumulated fallen leaves in shaded areas.  Most common trees in Michigan with high tannin are Oak (highest), Maple, Pine, & Black Walnut.  Neglected maintenance during the fall season also contributes to leaf stain.

Thankfully, leaf stains are rarely permanent-but they can become more difficult to remove over time. The sooner you clean them, the better your chances of restoring the original appearance of your brick pavers.

How to Remove Leaf Stains from Brick Pavers:

1.  Basic cleaning with water and a broom.

2.  Use an oxygenated cleaner or efflorescence remover. (Avoid harsh acids (like muriatic acid( which can damage pavers and surrounding vegetation).

3.  Try a vinegar and water solution (DIY Option) **Treat a small, inconspicuous area first to be sure it doesn't discolor your pavers**

4. Pressure Washing.  Hire a professional company to wash and re-sand your pavers.  Sealing the pavers can also protect them.

Leaf stains on brick pavers are common but treatable.  With prompt cleaning and routine maintenance, you can keep your outdoor spaces looking clean, vibrant, and inviting year-round.
