Ornamental Grasses

Ornamental grasses are used for aesthetic purposes to enhance a landscape.  They range in size from 3 inches to 10 feet tall. The colors they display are quite a site to see.  During the winter months, the leaves poke through the snow showing various shades of straw and tan.  Some types remain green all winter long.  Removing leaves from grasses should be done in March so new growth can happen in late April. While most grasses are narrow and pointed at the tips, there are vast differences beyond that.

Grass leaves come in every shade of green and blue, golden and yellow, bronze, red, silver, and many varieties of stripes.  They often change colors or intensify color in the fall.  The flowers on the grasses are large and showy.  They come in a variety of colors and often remain effective during the winter months.

Grasses are typically planted to accent a landscape design.  There are a large variety of styles and sizes.  Depending on what you're looking for they can be used as ground cover, clumped together for a tropical effect, or planted as a hedge.  They look terrific when coupled with shorter colorful perennials such as Autumn Joy Sedum or black eyed Susan. When your looking for a way to spruce up your landscaping consider ornamental grasses.
